Newsflash – Gail Chia wins A Div Girls triple jump as RI JC dominate National Schools T & F C’ships
Gail Chia dominated and won the A Division Girls triple jump event at the National Schools Track and Field Championships this afternoon to erase the bitter disappointment of her narrow loss in the same event at last year’s competition.
The 18-year-old Raffles Institution (Junior College) student leapt 11.20m to capture the title at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium. It was clear that she was a class above the rest of her field today as nearest rival Amanda Goh of National Junior College was 16cm behind with her 11.04m silver-medal winning effort.
Celeste Yeo from VJC was third with 10.97m.
Last year, Gail suffered heartbreak when she missed out on the triple jump goal by a mere centimetre. She had cleared 10.98cm, only to see Victoria JC’s Jeolinita Yeo pip her to the crown with her 10.99m leap.
Gail’s triumph today means that she is now in line for two jump golds at this year’s Championships. She is scheduled to compete in the A Division long jump next Monday. She won the event last year with her 5.12m effort.
Meanwhile, RI JC swept all the medals in the A Division Boys 5,000m today. Soh Rui Yong won the event in 16min 38.53sec while school mates Lim Zhi Ming (16min 51.06sec ) and Kevin Dao (17min 10.06sec) were second and third respectively.
