Bewilderment. Embarrassment. Shame. Frustration.
The match ended 30 minutes ago but I’m still reeling from the result.
At this point, I don’t know which is the worse result – Singapore being thrashed 0-4 by Malaysia in the 2000 Tiger Cup (now known as the AFF Suzuki Cup) on home ground, or losing 1-4 to India (India, for crying out loud!) in the final group game of the Asian Games football tournament.
What the f*&k happened, guys? This was the do-or-die game. You guys were in the driving seat after that 0-0 draw with Qatar, even though you subsequently lost 0-2 to Kuwait.
But when push came to shove, you guys didn’t just not deliver, you were completely hammered. By India, a team not known for its football prowess on the Asian stage.
How did we come to this? How did we manage to plummet from that admirable 0-0 draw to this appalling display tonight in the space of six days?? From a sense of hope to yet another return trip to Singapore even before the Asian Games opening ceremony.
Here’s a piece of advice to the Football Association of Singapore: please do not nominate the Lions for future editions of the Asian Games. It’s clear that it will all be a waste of public money.
Spare a thought for your long-suffering fans. We don’t need the embarrassment or sense of humiliation.
