Newsflash: Balpreet captures 100m gold while Mariam settles for triple jump silver

Singapore’s track and field contingent brought in two more medals at the Arafura Gamesin Darwin  today but also continued to dish out performances that were way below their personal bests.

Sprinter Balpreet Kaur easily captured the Women’s 100m title in a relatively slow time of 12.59secs, about 0.36sec slower than her personal best of 12.23sec which she set at the Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union Pre-Olympic Athletics Championships in Kuala Lumpur last July.

It was clear that the 18-year-old suffered from a lack of push in her pet event as nearest rival, Leisa Ohl, of the Australian Developmental Squad, finished way behind in 12.98sec.

Meanwhile, national triple jump record holder Mariam Shazana had a disappointing day in the sand-pit by her standards. The 17-year-old finished second in the Women’s U-18 event after only managing 11.29m as her best effort.

Australian Development athlete Kertisha Thompson won the event with 11.85m.

Last month, Mariam broke her national record of 11.66m when she cleared 11.70m at the Negri Sembilan Open. She is hoping to clear 12m by June in order to qualify for the IAAF World Youth Championships in Italy in July.
