Shame on you, S-League, for even nominating Shahril for the Player of the Year Award in the first place.

The crowning of Shahril Ishak as the S-League’s Player of the Year for the 2010 season is a sad indictment of  the moral state of local football.

Sure, the 26-year-old midfielder and playmaker may have had a stellar season with Home United, his performances and 17 goals playing a major part in Home’s pursuit of the title.

But the fact remains that Shahril left his club to join Indonesia Super League side Persib Bandung several matches before the end of the season.

And as The New Paper astutely noted in its report: “After his departure, the Protectors never regained the momentum to keep their title charge going and finished third.”

The New Paper also quoted Shahril as saying that he had no choice but to take up the offer from Persib Bandung.

“I feel sad that my team struggled after I left. But it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for me to leave for Indonesia. I had to take it,” he said.

I do not deny that Shahril is a highly-talented player and that he had a great season with Home.

But regardless of how Shahril chose to explain it, the fact remains that he had abandoned his club for a higher-paying opportunity at a crucial stage of the title race. Mind you, his departure didn’t just jeopardise Home’s title chances. It also dealt a huge blow to the attractiveness of the competition.

All this, in my book, should have automatically disqualified him from being even nominated for the Player of the Year award in the first place.

And yet, the S-League chose to put him on a pedestal instead. In doing so, they have sent the wrong message to all other young aspiring footballers.

On his part, Shahril should have also done the noble thing and declined the nomination from the start.

Shame on you, S-League.

Hi – I totally agree with this.

I think the reason to crown Shahril Ishak is more political. He is set to captain the Lions (or so i heard) in the Suzuki Cup, so this award may serve to inspire him?

What do you think of Etoile players and managers missing out on the awards entirely?

Hi, while I can accept Patrick Vallee being looked over for the Coach’s award (after all, he did have 7 red cards this season), it’s pretty clear that Mendy should have been the outright winner of the Player of the Year award. I could also have lived with Aleksandar Duric getting it. But not Shahril.

      Thanks for your feedback. Cheers

    Hi

I have to disagree with your view here sir.

Why do you feel Mendy should have been the outright winner of the Player of the Year award? Yes, he was league top-scorer, but surely overall performance is more important than goals? That’s why the Top Scorer award is another category altogether.

Even then, he has not been the best striker in the league. Most prolific, yes, but surely not the best. He has missed countless of goalscoring opportunities because of a lack of composure. In fact, he even lost his place in the Etoile First XI to Anthony Moulin in the second quarter of the season.

And since you speak of the moral state of football, how dispicable is Mendy for taunting Balestier’s K Vikraman about his wife, a few weeks after she had passed away? Vikraman reacted, got sent off, and Etoile won that game. How is it you support a player who clearly regularly play-acts on the pitch (outright cheating, in my opinion) to win an advantage for his team?

All in all, I understand where you come from, sir, but I totally disagree with the view that Shahril is not deserving of the Player of the Year award. For me, he has been the only player consistently performing at a high level, even when his team has been poor (in the first half of the season).

      Dear Sazali

Thank you for your invaluable feedback. If indeed what you say of Mendy did happen, then I stand corrected. In this case, I would say that Duric would be the best winner of the award — not Mendy, but definitely not Shahril either.

      Regards

shahril ishak scored 2 set of hatrick, first against geylang and second against saffc..and he has been consistent throught the season he played fro home united..just by missing a few games thru the ending, tats not mean he has not been playing for the sleague..
and he has been playing for the sleague for 8 years and dosent make him more deserving for the award after his incredibly good season! and mind u he is a midfielder but he scored 17 goals making him home united top scored and 3rd position in the top scorer table..from my opinion if he stays longer throughout the season end,he might also win the top scorer awards defeating mendy..anyway mendy won the top scorer and tat enuf for him as his first year in sleague…he has a long way to go and many years to go if he want to win the player of the year..just make sure he is still in sleague..
shahril himself deserve to be nominated let alone wining the tittle!before winning the tittle,he is being crowned the captain of singapore national senior squad, doesnt tat show how raddy look up on him as much deserving from his most consistent season? so y now argue over the title which has already been won????

  6. Dilla says:

Shame on urself for not even getting ur facts right!Shahril has been in the SLEAGUE for 8 whole years and he deserves to win the title! You have no idea how much hard work he put into the SLEAGUE and representing Singapore.Making the move to Indonesia was a wise move as the Singapore league is definitely not doing well as compared to the last few years. It wasn’t hus fault that the protectors didnt do well.In fact,he has every right to make his decisions.the protectors should’ve worked even harder to stay on top of the table without him around. They can’t just depend on him.And its also a shame on you for suggesting that the player from Etoile FC should’ve won the title. He is not even a Singaporean and the team he is playing for is not even a Singaporean team. You should change ur name Mister.
