SEA Games: Singapore wins a gold each in shooting, swimming and snooker

After winning 10 golds yesterday, Singapore’s gold rush in the SEA Games in Laos turned into a trickle today.

Our athletes ended up with just three golds instead, courtesy of the men’s 10m air pistol team, the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay quartet of Quah Ting Wen, Lynette Lim, Amanda Lim and Mylene Ong and the men’s snooker doubles partnership of Ang Boon Chin and Lim Chun Kiat.

SEA Games rookie Nigel Lim marked his debut in style by combining with Gai Bin and Poh Lip Meng to win Singapore’s first-ever gold in the 10m air pistol team event.

The trio scored a total of 1,719 points to take away the crown from defending champion Vietnam who scored 1,710 points. Thailand won the bronze with their tally of 1,696.

Their triumph means that Singapore has now won four golds in shooting in Laos.

In swimming, a targeted gold in the women’s 400m freestyle did not materialize as Quah Ting Wen and Lynette Lim were beaten by Malaysia’s Khoo Cai Lin.

Lynette fought Khoo tooth and nail but could not stop her rival from touching home first in a new SEA Games record time of 4min 10.75sec. Still, Lynette’s silver-medal time of 4:11.24 was a new national record. Ting Wen took the bronze.

But Lynette and Ting Wen bounced back to help Singapore to win the 4x100m freestyle relay. Combining with Amanda Lim and Mylene Ong, they stopped the clock in a new SEA Games and national record time of 3:45.73.

The previous SEA Games record was 3:51.86, set by Thailand at the last SEA Games while the prevous national record was 3:46.91.

Singapore’s third gold came from the snooker doubles pair of Ang Boon Chin and Lim Chun Kiat who beat Malaysia’s Thor Chuan Leong and Chee Wee Lai in the final.
